Visit Herculaneum and Pompeii

Like the nearby town of Pompeii, the ancient city of Herculaneum was a victim of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Herculaneum is in a state of high preservation, and visitors can walk among ancient villas, spas, a magnificent gym, taverns and admire the clothes and furniture that have been kept intact by the volcanic eruption.

At the beginning of the 18th century, a chance discovery was made during the construction of a well that sparked to the first archaeological investigations in 1738 under Charles III of Bourbon. However, excavations were interrupted over the years.

In 1980, the skeletons of 300 people were found under the arches of buildings near the coast, where they had sought refuge. Some objects that they had brought with them, such as keys, coins and work tools, were found together with the skeletons.

When you visit the site of Herculaneum, you can appreciate the grandeur and culture of the city of the time. The remains are perfectly preserved under the volcanic ash and you can admire beautifully designed villas and squares, mosaics, frescoes, furniture, doors and roofs that are still in excellent condition.

You can explore Herculaneum along an evocative route formed of parallel galleries. The precious artefacts discovered here testify to the habits and culture of the time, enabling us to reconstruct the daily lives of the citizens.
