The Garden of the Fugitives is one of Pompeii's most emotionally impactful attractions, as it was here that 13 bodies were found during excavations in 1961. These people had tried to escape the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

Spanning approximately 1,500 square metres, the area was once cultivated as a vineyard.

The bodies of the fugitives were cast by pouring liquid chalk into the cavities left by the bodies in the solidified ash. The features of the bodies and faces leave the visitors to the excavations speechless.

In 2011, the Garden of the Fugitives underwent a restoration and the casts were placed on top of a thin layer of ash to commemorate the eruption that caused those people's deaths.
