The Forum of Pompeii was the main square of the ancient city of Pompeii buried by the eruption of Vesuvius. It represented the economic, political and religious centre of the country; within it there were religious and commercial civil services. The forum is one of the best preserved among the ancient Italian cities.

The structure of the Forum of Pompeii

The square of about 142 meters by 38 housed the most important religious and public buildings where justice was administered. There were also markets, while private houses were absent.

The pavement was in travertine (of which traces have almost been lost); on three sides there was a portico with a double-order portico of columns. On the fourth side was the Temple of Jupiter which was later dedicated to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva (the Capitoline triad).

Where is the Forum of Pompeii?

It is among the first points of interest that are encountered when you visit the excavations entering from Porta Marina. It is located at the end of Via Marina where the most important streets of the city converged.

Near the Forum you can visit the Forum Theatre, the Great Theatre, the Macellum, the Stabian Spa and the Lupanar.
