The Forum of Pompeii was the ancient city's main square, buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. It represented the economic, political and religious centre of the city; it housed religious and commercial services. The Forum of Pompeii is one of the best preserved in ancient Italy.

The structure of the Forum of Pompeii

Measuring about 142 meters by 38, the square housed the most important religious and public buildings where justice was administered. There were also markets, but no private houses.

The pavement was made of travertine (of which only traces remain); on three sides there was a portico with a double order of columns. The fourth side featured the Temple of Jupiter, later dedicated to the Capitoline Triad (Jupiter, Juno and Minerva).

Where is the Forum of Pompeii located?

It is one of the first points of interest encountered when visiting the excavations via Porta Marina. It is located at the end of Via Marina, where many of the city's main streets converge.

Near the Forum you can visit the Forum Theatre, the Great Theatre, the Macellum, the Stabian Spa and the Lupanar.
