The House of Sallust is one of the most important examples of a Samnite-era dwelling located in the ancient city of Pompeii. It dates back to the 2nd century B.C. and owes its name to an electoral inscription on the façade.

The house is in good condition and visitors can explore the atrium with its impluvium made of tuff and the portico with its columns.

Near the atrium there is an area consisting of a kitchen, a dining room and two bedrooms, all of which are surrounded by a peristyle. On the other side is the thermopolium.

In front of the house are six premises which house four shops, a bakery with an oven, a fireplace and three millstones, and a tavern.

After the earthquake of 62 A.D., it is likely that the House of Sallust was converted into a hotel.

Where is the House of Sallust located?

It is located in the western quarter of the excavations, on the right-hand side of Via Consolare, before the junction that leads to Porta Ercolano. Nearby are the Roman baths, the House of the Faun and the House of the Vettii.
